Want a few tips on things to do for SEO? This is by no means a complete list of must-dos, nor should it be followed religiously. This list is however a few things that I take into consideration when developing an SEO plan for my clients and certainly the things I consider when designing and developing a new website.

  1. Avoid JS drop down menus or image maps. Be sure to put text links somewhere on the page for the spiders to read.
  2. Be sure to have well-written, relevant & unique content that focuses on your primary keyword or keyword phrase. Contact Sui Generis Editing for your web friendly content.
  3. Quality backlinks that use your keyword phrase as the link is important. If there is no good, reason for that site to link to you, you don’t want the link on your site.
  4. Every page on your site should have a unique keyword focused title tag.
  5. If you need to have the name of your company in the page title tag, put it at the end.
  6. Fresh content, fresh content, fresh content.
  7. Links to your site & on your site should use your keywords. If your target is “vancouver fitness trainer” then link to “vancouver fitness trainer” instead of a “click here” link. Ted Loo Fitness does a great job of this.
  8. Put your location in your content and keywords to help you with your local search results. Ex. “our favourite Vancouver SEO provider” not “our favourite SEO provider”
  9. Keywords should be search phrases, not just single words.
  10. Search spiders can crawl text, not Flash or images. Build your website for your client with Search Engine in mind. Your designer should understand basic SEO needs. Flipside Creative is a brilliant Vancouver Website Designers and Company Branding…If you don’t know them, you should.
  11. Do the best you can to include your keywords/keyword phrases in links, image ALT tags & even your domain name if you can.
  12. Use hyphens in your page URLs and domain name instead of underscores.
  13. What is link splitting? When outside links go to www.domain.com & internal links go to www.domain.com/index.html. This is bad…all links should go to just your domain name.
  14. Flash sites and framed sites can only get index for one page only. If I want to link to your services page, I can’t.
  15. Want to get the spiders on your new website? You can use Google submit form but that takes time. If is faster to get your site spidered by getting a quality site to link to your site.
  16. If you seriously can’t come up with fresh content for your site. Then you HAVE to blog. Search spiders like fresh content. Ideally, blogging a couple times a week should do the trick.
  17. When is quality better than quantity? Always, but especially with link building. One very relevant link can do more than 10 irrelevant links.
  18. Search Engines are smarter than you think. They actually read. Don’t just stuff your keywords into your content if it doesn’t read well. Your prospective clients won’t like it either.
  19. Your blog post titles should be optimizing separately from your blog title.
  20. The bottom line is the SEO is a popularity contest. The more action your site gets, the more you get noticed. Bet you thought high school was in the past…
  21. Driving traffic to your site is key. How will you drive traffic to your site? Fresh relevant content, blog posts, social media posts, enewsletters, google adwords, to name a few.
  22. Look for the non-profits to help. .EDU domains are weighted more by the search engines. See if you can sponsor a non-profit .edu site to get your link on their site. Everyone wins.
  23. What is link baiting? Linked text that grabs your attention and makes me click it. If I said that SEO was like Larping and linked to my webpage on their connection, wouldn’t want to read more about it?
  24. Each page should have its own single keyword phrase focus. Don’t optimize one page for several keywords and don’t optimize all your pages with the same keyword.
  25. SEO needs a babysitter. It isn’t a one shot deal. SEO needs change often, so you can count on needing to hand hold the progress. A little encouragement goes a long way.
  26. Images need love. Couple an image with a caption that is rich with your keywords. Don’t forget the ALT tags.
  27. Fresh content, fresh content, fresh content. Oops did I say that already? Then I guess you should take my word for it. IT IS VITAL.
  28. Having the search engines find your pages organically is fantastic. But why not do all that you can to help? Don’t forget your XML sitemap, and don’t forget to submit it to the search engines.
  29. Use absolute links throughout your website. This means instead of linking your contact page by just adding “/contact-us.html” use your whole domain name in the link. If someone copies your content straight from your site, you will get backlink bonus. BOOYAH
  30. Social Marketing IS part of SEO. Know sites like Google +, Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Byzhub, etc., the better you will be able to compete in search.
  31. Be sure to submit your videos to video sites like Metacafe, AOL, MSN, Yahoo and Youtube.
  32. Viral components on your website or blog like: reviews, sharing functions, ratings, visitor comments, etc all help
  33. Back to Basics – building internal links. Integrating internal links into your site is a sure fire way to get individual pages noticed.
  34. Use URLs with a more SEO friendly naming structure by adding clear keywords
  35. Doing something is better than nothing. Better to have a slice of the pie, then none at all.
